During the month October a national competition was set by Freetrade Ireland and sponsored by the EPA’s Green Enterprise programme, to challenge the reuse community to unearth the creativity within and create something new out of something old.
The challenge was accepted by Robert Heary of Rediscover Cycling who created a set of speakers using some leftover workshop materials from the refurbishment and upcycling of bikes. Robert took a sheet of metal used in car repair & turned it into a tube .

Read MoreAs progress continues on the development of the Rediscovery Centre’s interactive environmental education facility, focus has turned to the opportunities presented by the natural environment. Architectural landscape plans have been put to the test with Purcell Construction once again embracing the reuse challenge to create a kitchen garden with a difference. In keeping with the ethos of the WISER Life project, the newly installed planters for the garden have been constructed using old pipes and steel beams from the old Ballymun Boiler house.

The centre opens to the public in January 2017 and will provide a new destination where we all can share in the journey towards a greener more sustainable future.

Read MoreOne of the most important elements of the WISER project is to highlight and showcase reuse. The WISER team have dedicated a lot of time to researching and identifying materials that may be suitable for reuse in the construction of our prototype 3D textbook and education centre.
Early in the project, the old Emerald project construction site in Ballymun was identified as a possible source of reusable materials. Construction of the Emerald Project housing scheme was temporarily suspended in April 2011 due to the contracting company going into liquidation.

The WISER team invite proposal submissions from designers for the creation of statement pieces for inclusion in the development of the 3D textbook and reuse education centre. The closing date for expressions of interest is 7th October 2016. More information is available here.

All finishes have been selected with the project criteria in mind, ensuring reuse is at the forefront of the agenda and that natural and ecologically sustainable materials are used where reuse is not possible, either due to lack of supply or cost.
The cladding will consist of a variety of materials including brick, galvanised steel and timber.
Read MoreThe Ballymun Creative Lab is an innovative collaborative art project developed in partnership by the Rediscovery Centre, NCAD Access Programme and the Axis Arts Centre, Ballymun. This pilot project sets out to develop a creative model of engagement with students on the circular economy and sustainability principles through photography, media, technology, and fashion practice. Aimed at young people from DEIS schools throughout Dublin, the programme will run over two weeks and is primarily is focused on raising awareness of opportunities through further education to influence sustainable lifestyles and will encourage third level study.
Read MoreA two-week collaborative pilot project developed by the National College of Art & Design (NCAD) and The Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun, an environmental social enterprise, culminates tomorrow (15.07.16) with an exhibition of work in the Axis Arts Centre by the 15 secondary school students involved.
The project, entitled ‘Creative Lab’, has been running since 4th July with students from five schools across North Dublin: St Michael’s Holy Faith; Rosmini Community School; Newcross College; St Kevin’s College and Margaret Aylward Community School.
